Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Dance Video Meant to Shame Her.
On Thursday, January 3, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made history when she became the youngest-ever member of Congress — a Congress that has more women and women of color in it than ever before. Nothing can take that honor away from Ocasio-Cortez, but the trolls sure can (and will) try. In some corners of social media, people are trying to do just that by pointing to a video of Ocasio-Cortez dancing on a rooftop, including slut-shaming comments about her on-camera performance. Some have said the video makes Ocasio-Cortez look like a “nitwit,” while others have used the video to slut shame the newly sworn-in Congresswoman. What they left out is that the video was made during her time at Boston University, through the school’s Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground — an organization aimed at promoting community on campus.
“Here is America’s favorite commie know-it-all acting like the clueless nitwit she is… …High School video of ‘Sandy’ Ocasio-Cortez,” one person wrote on Twitter with a clip of Ocasio-Cortez dancing in the video. Another framed her as “a slut” in reference to the video. Still, others said that the video is proof that Ocasio-Cortez could “go dance on a stage that has a pole” once she’s done in Congress.
There are obviously more than a few things wrong with these arguments. Dancing doesn’t make someone a “nitwit,” nor does it make them a slut — and that includes any kind of dancing. It must be said that choosing to be a stripper doesn’t classify someone as anything other than a person working at a job. Being a stripper or any other kind of sex worker doesn’t say anything about how much sex someone does or doesn’t have, or what their morals are. But that should be irrelevant here because we’re not looking at a video of someone stripping or doing anything sexual in nature at all. We’re looking at a college student dancing on the roof of a university building in a manner that can only be described as dorky.
